The cicada buzzed
When I almost stepped on it
With my new gym shoes.

Alex asked, “What’s that?”
He’d never heard cicadas
And their noisy song.
3.
They will “disappear”
And silence their summer song
For seventeen years.
4.
How many millions
Of cicadas does it take
To make so much noise?
5.
Cicada summer
Nights in Chicago are loud
And full of their song
6.
The cicadas paused
After the gunshot rang out-
They sensed the danger.
