TWO LONG-DISTANCE CALLS FROM MEXICO (sonnet commemorating the birth my brother, Kyle A. Brown)

My brother and I were in Mexico

With our dad and step-mom on a road trip.

Our mom was pregnant- with a few weeks to go!

So, back in the day, before phones could flip,

Themba and I phoned home every day!

We called from St. Louis- and Dallas, too!

In Mexico, we called from Monterey,

And from any pay phone we could use.

So, when no one picked-up our daily call,

Expectant big brothers got impatient,

And we made another long-distance call

To Grandma Widman from a gas station.

When we got the news, we jumped up and down

Celebrating Kyle Adrian Brown.
